Got Camera Phone?

Here at Slugcity, we run a piece of software called Gallery. This software allows us to place the weird and wacky pictures of our events for the world to see. You know the site as the Slugcity Gallery at www.slugcity.com/gallery/.

I've been reading on the Gallery website about the new features comming to version 2.0 of this software, and this is what is in the works :

* Users able to set up gallery pages to display their own photos

* If you have a camera phone, set up your own photoblog on Slugcity.com

* Watermark your photos to prevent copyright information

* Faster performance on displaying thumnails and regular photos

Once a stable version of Gallery 2.0 comes out, we will send out an announcement on how to sign up for your own photoblog or Gallery photo website!!!!

Slugcity Anti-Spam

I've turned on the Anti-Spam filter here at slugcity.com on the mailserver. If you have a mail account on slugcity.com, and you get spam, it will have the following in the subject line :

{Spam?}

The Anti-Spam server is in learning mode right now. It will start tagging spam as it come into the server. Once it gets a good database, you can set up a filter on the server or your e-mail client to filter this spam to a directory. If you want to delete it and not have it delivered to your account, we can set that up also.

If an e-mail comes thru with {Spam?} in the subject, and it's not spam, please send me an e-mail and I can tag it as "not spam".

Just making your slugcity.com e-mail account that much better....

Slugcity Portal 1.0

Today was looking at the way Yahoo's homepage is laid out, and was wanting a page that was customized to only the things I wanted to look at. I don't care about Yahoo Auctions, or Yahoo Chat. 95% of Yahoo is crap. I also wanted to search Google, but look at news stories, and other websites I look at daily.

There is this nifty little programming language called XML which allows people to share "headlines" with each other. It allows you to view news stories, blog topics and some other cool stuff with a little programming knowledge.

So I built me a little page to do all this. It's called Slugcity Portal One Point Oh.

I've made it my homepage, cause it's customized to me, but feel free to make it your own homepage. Version 2.0 will be coming soon....

Click on the below link to take you to the Slugcity Portal.

Novarg.A worm virus

The W32.Novarg.A worm is spreading rapidly throughout the internet. Reports indicate that this is a much, much worse virus than the W32.Sobig.F virus that hit a few months ago. It has been estimated that the Novarg worm is attached to one out of nine emails sent.

Symantec has the following information on this worm:

W32.Novarg.A@mm

It is highly advisable to update your virus definitions immediatly if you have nt done it in the past day or so. Also set your PC to run a virus scan nightly for the next several days (the virus spread is supposed to peak today). And as always, don't open attachments from someone you don't know. In fact, do not even open the email to read it (if it contains an attachment). If you have any questions regarding this virus.....post a topic in the tech forum, and one of us will do our best to help you out.

If you think that "this won't happen to me" you are mistaken. I have been hit with this virus 7 times in the past 24 hours on my home PC. That means, I have had 7 emails containing this virus.

Linux Linksys Logger

So looking for that logger program to parse out those Linksys logs? Don't want to send them to a windows host because that's not where all the logs go? Don't trust windows? HA! Tired of shareware running out of eval days?

I just installed Linksysmon for Redhat 7.3 and it works like a charm. Easy to install, and it works right out of the box. It even sets up it's own logrotate. Nice! This program is for all you that don't want to set up snmptrapd to listen to the world...

Win32 Blaster Worm

Another vulnerability to the Windows Operating system. This one uses an exploit to the RPC endpoint mapper and it affects Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

Reportedly, you know you have it when "......a 60 second shutdown timer pops up on your screen" but by then it may be too late.

Fortunately, the Evil Empire (Micro$oft) has released a patch for it, that can be downloaded here The patch only works on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. This patch was first released in March of 2003, however, the Blaster Worm is making it's way around the internet because many people have not been applying their patches.

[rant]okay, we all hate to sit around and download large files, unless they are pictures of Slug events, however, most of these patches plug holes to the Windows OS.....really can't stress enough to keep your patches updated on your PC. And I can't stress the importance of updating your Anti-Virus application on a regular basis (at least twice a week). And for you broadband users out there, I HIGHLY recommend a firewall (either hardware or software). If you have questions, or want recommendations, post something in the Tech Forum and several of us will provide many recommendations.[/rant]

If you are already effected with the Blaster Worm (also known as the Lovsan worm), a removal tool can be found here. This site from Symantec also provides more information on this worm.

Slugcity Bulletin Board Forum

Since Slugcity's creation on April 18, 2002 we have made many milestones. Below are a few to name :

April 18, 2002 - Slugcity was born
Nov 4, 2002 - Slugcity website was launched
March 3, 2003 - Slugcity chat was created
May 23 - 26, 2003 - SLUGFEST 2k3!!!
May 28, 2003 - Slugcity Photo Album

And now June 28, 2003 - Slugcity forum is launched!!!!!

The Slugcity bulletin board forum is a place where we can create topics, talk about events and vent somewhere other than the main site. Slugcity Forum is going to be less formal and open to anything.

You can see forums are already created, if you think of any other forums that need to be created, please post a comment.

This forum is not to take the place of the blog your reading now. You will always need to check the main site to get news and information about upcoming events, or to get a good laugh.

Note that you will need to create a user account to post to the Slugcity Forum. You will need to remember your account name and password for future use.

This bulletin board system has many useful features like a calendar, a messaging system and forum moderation. There is a slight learning curve with this BB, so be patient. Once you figure it out, you'll be amazed how easy it is to find new posts you have not see yet and how to get around the site.

Get me into the forum!!!!!!!

Slugcity E-mail Accounts

So the time has come to give out e-mail accounts to the slugs on slugcity. If you would like an account, please send an e-mail to slugadmn >"at"< slugcity.com. If you have trouble, please post a comment and we will get back with you.

If you request an e-mail account, and you are granted one, there are a few things you should know.

1) Your e-mail address will be username@slugcity.com where username is your login ID.

2) Your slugcity e-mail account is for personal use only.

3) Please do not spread your slugcity.com e-mail account all over the web for spammers to grab it (ebay, chat rooms, etc....). Use your slugcity.com account to send e-mail to friends. If your account is receiving a great deal of spam, it will be disabled without notice. Slugcity admins do monitor the spam counts, but do not monitor the actual content of e-mails.

4) Your password will be secret to only you and no one else. Once your account is set up, you may change your inital password to something only you know by logging into your account with Putty (a connection tool to slugcity.com). To do this, follow the following directions on the how to log into your account thu putty (shell access)homepage.

5) You can read and send e-mail thru the web interface found at www.slugcity.com/webmail. There is a link to this site on the main slugcity.com webpage. Please be aware this is not a secure site, so please log off after your done reading and sending e-mail on slugcity.com. More secure e-mail methods will be coming soon.

Spam for the Masses

Ponder the following....

You create an e-mail asking for money which everyone donates a penny to your cause. After they donate the penny, they send the e-mail to 4 of their friends. Each one donates a penny and sends the e-mail on to 4 more friends. This heads around the world and the original e-mail is forwarded only 15 times.

Below is how many people donate to your cause :

1 Times Forwarded : 4
2 Times Forwarded : 16
3 Times Forwarded : 64
4 Times Forwarded : 256
5 Times Forwarded : 1024
6 Times Forwarded : 4096
7 Times Forwarded : 16384
8 Times Forwarded : 65536
9 Times Forwarded : 262,144
10 Times Forwarded : 1,048,576
11 Times Forwarded : 4,194,304
12 Times Forwarded : 16,777,216
13 Times Forwarded : 67,108,864
14 Times Forwarded : 268,435,456
15 Times Forwarded : 1,073,741,824

After 15 forwards, granted everyone paied you, you would end up with 10.7 million bucks in your account. Not bad for a couple hours of work. This is a great scam right before tax day.

Xupiter Computer Spyware

Everyone who gets on the net with Internet Expolder should take a look at this. I searched my PC and found this spyware on all my PC's (not my linux servers!!!...ummm).

PC Fear Factor: Official Xupiter Spyware Page

I would download Ad-aware and Zone Alarm for starters to help guard your PC. Throw in a good virus scanner and I think you're good to go.

Slugcity Webmail

For those of you that have a slugcity.com e-mail account, the webmail interface is up and running. There is a link on the right hand side of the slugcity.com main page. You can also go to http://www.slugcity.com/webmail/ and find it there also. You will still be able to pop your mail from the server, but this just gives you another way to get your mail if your not in front of your favorite winblows machine.
