To those of you that have not checked out the new Metallica album, St. Anger, I strongly advise doing so.
This is (arguably) the heaviest album since ....And Justice For All. No more of that pussy pop shit written to make the Billboard Top 40, just plain 'ol kick ass heavy metal. The shit we've been yearning to hear again.
This isn't quite the classic speed metal that Puppets had to offer, but then again, not much really compares to that album, however, this album makes me want to start a mosh pit in my living room and thrash like I was 18 again. The guy in this picture is suddenly cool again.
By the way, I picked up my copy from Tower Records for $11.99 the night it went on sale. Not only does it have over 75 minutes of music, the CD is also enhanced, so shove it into your PC to see what it does (I have not been able to pry mine out of my CD player long enough to see for myself). It also contains a full length DVD with a studio video of the band playing the full length of the album in the studio. Definitely a great value.
Posted by jailbird at June 6, 2003 02:51 PM in Music | TrackBackF'n A....Finally a Metallica with some girth!!!! Every song on this album is kick ass!! St. Anger starts out with Frantic, which reminds of the start of Master of Puppets...BATTERY!!!!! Finally the return of some heavy shit!
Posted by: natas on June 6, 2003 11:22 PMI admit that I was skeptical (The Black Album was a letdown, and it went downhill from there), but after hearing a "preview" on the local radio station, I'll say that it was at least _interesting_, which their music hasn't been for me in years.
I like the speed, and I like the riffs. The tempo changes raised my eyebrows; Metallica _can_ out-Megadeth Megadeth, at least with plenty of studio help. Dave Mustaine will be pissed off again.
Sometimes it seems like James is really straining himself, both with the range and the so-so lyrics on a few of the songs I heard. There is a clanging/banging percussion noise on _every_ song I heard... a little drum or cymbal? A mutant cowbell? I'm not sure I could listen to an hour of that. (Then again, I didn't think I could listen to an hour of the 13th Floor Elevators' "Jug Noise", and now it's no big deal.) It almost sounds like they use drum tracks or loops on some of the songs.
Even with me bitching about some things, it's MUCH fucking better than stuff like "Reload". It looks like they have stopped using their Metal for Evil, and are using it only for Good. Yay! (Or is it the other way 'round? ;) )
Posted by: Yaldabaoth on June 8, 2003 10:19 PMIm very unimpressed, while they may have tried to speed it up and be harder than they have been on previous albums the sound sucks. I really can't stand the drums either some of the songs start out with great potential only to be ruined by the drums starting. Also James sounds like he's trying to hard to belt out the vocals.
Its funny that you think its very megadeth also, speshulk and I we discussing that just last night.
You all know how much i hate the Black Album, and i really think its much better musically and vocally than this one. They get an "A" for effort, but
Sorry got interupted.
They get an "A" for effort, but the content is not on par with anything which i would expect.
Thats my 2 cents
Posted by: jaywalker on June 9, 2003 01:15 PMI would agree that this is not their best work. Nothing compares to Puppets, Ride the Lightning, Kill 'em all, ...and Justice for All. But nonetheless, this is still a great album. Much, much better than Load, ReLoad, and possibly even the black album (I was never a big fan of that one). At any rate, Metallica has gone back to their roots, and found that they still have some metal in them.
It's about fucking time. Another lame album would have been the end of them.
Posted by: Jailbird on June 9, 2003 07:49 PMSome 2 cents from me :
1) that werid percussion sound is the snare drum going "ping" instead of "pop". This is the new sound of producer Bob Rock. Go back and listen to some other bands Bob has produced in the last 2 years and you will hear that snare "ping" sound.
2) This record has a "dirty" sound, it should, it's angry. If you listen closely, you will here James singing and not cutting off his whole note on time, or the Lars hitting the side of the tom drum head instaed of the middle of it. That's the way they like it, and that's the way it was produced. Almost like a live album, if you fuck it and it's not too noticeable, leave it.
3) As far as the lyrics, they are hard, angry and James is pissed off!!! I like that he is actually singing what he is feeling. The boys are getting older, they still can rock with the best of them. You don't hear many bands that have been together for 20 years sound the same as their "younger days".
4) If you listen to the DVD that came with your Cd, you will hear a totally different record on what was recorded on tape. Metallica is a live band, they do their best work on stage. They have always been against record labels who try and tell them what to do, people who say they have to make videos to promote the songs, etc... The guys jammed around, took the best parts of the studio jamming and then put vocals over them. None of the "beating a song for 6 months, playing it 1000 times and then recording it". I know what that feels like, I recorded a CD like that. You take your song and turn it into something that it wasn't 6 months ago when it was born.
Posted by: metallica_lover on June 9, 2003 08:03 PMI _thought_ it was a snare (without the snare?), but I couldn't tell by the high pitch. (Dang, it's been so long since High School band. ;) )
Their other recent (Recent? Within 10 years. :) )records were mainly overproduced; I can see why they wanted an "underproduced" sound.
I guess... I dunno... I wanted something better and different. I got different. And at least in that way, it _is_ better. :) If this is a first step toward Goodness, I'll take it.
Posted by: Yaldabaoth on June 9, 2003 10:20 PMI suppose nothing they do will be as good as the first four albums. I think this has to do with Cliff Burtons death.
If i remember right they had already written most of Justice before he died on the Puppets tour. Jason Newstead basically came in and played what was already written. Then the black album was the first album he helped write. It still has some good bass rife's in it, but nothing like what Cliff layed down. I think his loss was greatest impact on the way there music sounds now.
I can tolerate the new album but its not what i would expect.
I would agree that Metallica's music did change (maybe a coincedence?) after Cliff's death. But also around that time period, speed metal was on it's decline, and Metallica suddenly became "main stream" and very wealthy. I think all those factors contributed to the style of music they were recording.
This album is definitly a step in the right direction, and I still dig it. Not the best work they've done, but a kick ass album at any rate.
